July was a busy month for the agronomy team as we completed aggressive summer renovation cycles on the course; recovery from renovations has been achieved ahead of target due to the strong growth of the Paspalum turf and favourable weather conditions. The weather in July has been favourably with low winds and high humidity; this has enabled the irrigation team to recover dry areas and return the course to a uniform colour. Strong growth has made maintaining green speed challenging however increased plant growth regulations along with extra rolling and mowing has enabled speeds of close to 10 all month.
Due to summer working hour restrictions the team has been operating spilt shifts; despite this challenge good progress was achieved on detailing in desert areas, bunker works, weed control to roughs, cleaning lakes and recovering weak rough transition areas around the course. The recently extended areas of greens have fully developed into putting grade turf by month’s end. Limited weak rough areas remain present around the golf course however works are ongoing on turfing, sprigging and top-dressing as we strive to achieve full density over the coming month.
Looking ahead to August the team will be focused on completed the final summer renovation cycles to greens and tee, recovering remaining weak transition areas, detailing of desert areas and trimming of native bushes/shrubs as we strive to present the course in prime conditions ahead of the start of season and busier play levels in September. Bunker sand distribution, irrigation improvements and weed control works will continue during August.
As we enter the final period of the summer season the agronomy team is looking ahead to over-seeding; all seed is on route to Bahrain and expected to arrive by late August/early September. This season we will once again close the course during seeding for 12 days; due to global shortages of ryegrass seed in 2022 we will be seeding greens, tees and rough for the season ahead. The planned seeding program will provide members and guests with prime winter playing conditions while maintaining our place as the only course in the region to seed greens surfaces and with one of the largest over-seed programs in place for other areas.
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy your golfing in August.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
