November was a busy month for the agronomy team as we focused on strengthening and developing the new over-seed, worked towards achieving final mowing heights and returning to standard speed and firmness on greens. During the month we worked on improving detail prior to hosting the club championships and Kind Hamed Trophy. Further heavy rainfall was experienced during the month which caused significant damages to hole 8 approach and several bunkers. The team worked extremely hard to return bunkers back into play and remove surface waters to enable the course to remain open for play and limit any disruption for golfers.
In November native grass pruning was completed around the entire course and a number of tree canopies were raised to improve playability. The Wee Monty was seeded early in November and re-opening as planned with successful results from this year’s seeding, final mowing heights were achieved by month’s end. Despite the unsettled weather and challenges faced during this year’s seeding the agronomy team is pleased with the results and expects the grass to continue developing over the coming weeks offering superior playing conditions for the winter season.
Looking ahead to December and the agronomy team will be focused on improving detail in the desert areas, removal of landscape planting in high traffic zones, completion of the range wall project and presenting the course for daily play. We will also commence winter project works such as bunker renovation works of adjusting sand depths and adding new sand as needed, planting of landscape and hedging at hole 1 tees, renovation to course furnishings and repairing of remaining flood damage on hole 8.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
