August was the hottest month of the summer so far with high humidity at times stretching our irrigation system to maximum; the irrigation team have worked tirelessly to ensure dry areas a limited and turf health is protected. Overall the course has held up strongly this summer season with strong growth, dense coverage and uniform colour present. During August the team completed all summer renovation cycles on the golf course with fast recovery achieved and strong turf health observed. In addition to renovations the focus of August was on bunker sand depth checks, desert detailing, weed control and developing weak areas of rough as we strive to increase course detailing ahead of September and the start of the busier golfing season.
Looking ahead to September and the teams focus will remain on improving detail; weed control, lake cleaning and refining surfaces for increased play levels. The removal of summer working hour restrictions in the month will help the team to achieve increased productivity and commence some project works such as landscape removal in select landing zones, removal of stones in desert areas, pruning of tree canopies and edging of desert areas.
The over-seed has now arrived ahead of planned closure in late October and over the coming two month period the agronomy team will be busy preparing the course and irrigation infrastructure ahead of the seeding process.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
