January marked the coldest temperatures of the winter season thus far with soil temperatures reaching below 10 degrees; as a result the base Paspalum has entered winter dormancy and the winter over-seed is performing strongly as the dominate grass. It was a busy month out on the golf course with several events most notably the club’s 20th Anniversary and The Race to Augusta competition. Overall the golf course is performing strongly with greens speed average 11 in the month; due to the increased play levels along with the cooler temperatures pitch marks and divots are a challenge for the agronomy team. Increased efforts are been made to encourage golfers to repair divots and pitch marks.
During the month the teams focus was on presenting the course for daily play, improving detailing of desert areas, bunker sand depth and distribution checks and pruning/ thinning of landscape shrubs. Behind the scenes the workshop, RO and irrigation teams are performing winter servicing and overhaul works to ensure smooth operations for the year ahead. Works to repair flood damage on hole 3 and 8 are now completed and the new turf is beginning to bed in with our focus to return these areas to play by the end of February.
Looking ahead to February and as temperatures increase our focus will be on refining playing surfaces, solid aerating of all surfaces to promote air movement within the soil profile and relieve compaction, continuation of bunker sand checks, lake bank cleaning and desert detailing works. Several planting projects are planned throughout the golf course and club house areas to improve the aesthetic look and feel of selected areas. With several golf events planned and only 5 weeks until the MENA Tour visits the agronomy team will be focused on presenting the course in prime conditions for the peak period ahead.
Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
