May marked a significant change on the golf course with the winter over-seeded declining as temperatures increased. By the end of May the winter grass was burned off fully across greens, tees and fairways. In rough significant winter grass remains however more and more Paspalum is becoming apparent each week; some high traffic areas are transitioning weak and will require re-turfing. Overall turf health is strong with good coverage and colour across most areas. Aggressive growth on greens is creating a challenge to maintain speed however increased rolling and mowing height changes are ensuring speed is maintained to our set standards.
As we enter the peak summer season irrigation management and repair of breaks is a top priority for the team. As with past summer seasons we suffered several irrigation pipe breaks and the team is working tirelessly to ensure turf remains irrigated and any impact on playing conditions is minimal. Another area of focus for the summer period is on weed control in rough areas; recent herbicide applications have shown good results in controlling grassy weeds so far in 2019. Further applications are planned to ensure rough areas remain as weed free as possible through the summer season. During applications some browning of target weeds will be observed however the surround Paspalum will cover these areas quickly.
Due to reduced working hours in Ramadan project works were limited and the agronomy team was focused on course presentation and detailing of in play areas. As we move into June and a return to normal working hours the team will prioritize detailing to ensure the desert areas are presented to our desired standards, lake bank cleaning, bunker sand distribution checks and landscape pruning. Our first summer renovation cycles to greens and tees will be performed in June with full recovery expected to take 14-18 days; these renovations will consist of thatch removal and aeration of the soil profile followed by heavy sand top-dressing to restore surface levels. The summer renovations are critical for sustainable turf health, maintaining firm surfaces and producing true ball roll. During these works the agronomy team will ensure limited disruption to play and focus on a swift recovery of surfaces.
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and understanding during upcoming renovation cycles and wish all players an enjoyable playing experience in June.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
