Temperatures increased significantly during March resulting in the return of active growth in the base Paspalum grass. Consistently strong winds during the month have caused the winter rye grass to decline in places with dry areas appearing on mounds and slopes. The team has worked tirelessly to hand water dry areas daily to minimize damage to turf health and ensure the course maintained a uniform colour. Greens continued to perform strongly with recent disease pressures reducing as growth accelerated; speeds were maintained at 10-10.5 with good ball roll present.
During March the team was busy completing lake cleaning, tree pruning and desert detailing projects. Winter irrigation adjustments were ongoing with new dripper line installed in several landscape areas around the course. We continued to focus on encouraging the summer grass back to active growth as we entered the early stages of transition between grass types. Regular vertical mowing and aeration was preformed to help aide air and water penetration of the soil profile to promote turf health. Towards the end of the month our first greens renovation of the season was completed with surfaces showing strong recovery and improved firmness by month’s end. The agronomy team continued to follow COVID-19 safety measures to ensure touch points on the course remain limited.
Looking ahead to April the team will be focused on aerating all surfaces to promote firmness and turf health in advance of Ramadan and reduced working hours. Where possible works will be performed in advance of play with limited impact on course playability envisioned. The irrigation team will be busy completing winter projects and ensuring dry areas are limited. Regular vertical mowing and cutting height adjustments will further encourage the Paspalum back to active growth as we strive to limited the disruption transition causes and ensure a strong coverage of summer turf for the summer season ahead.
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and wish all players an enjoyable playing experience in April.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
