October’s focus was on course set up for the busier golf levels and preparations for over-seed on the 27th. The seeding process has gone well with all holes of the championship course seeded within the first 3 days of closure; weather conditions were ideal for application with low wind and favorable temperatures. By month’s end we were beginning to see the early signs of germination and are hopeful of a successful seeding for the winter season ahead.
Once the seed is fully germinated we will commence mowing and setting the course up to reopen on the 8th of November. Upon reopening the golf course will play softer and slower than normal due to the irrigation volumes required to gain a successful germination. Over the coming weeks as the new seedlings establish and final mowing heights are achieved the course will firm up and playing conditions will return to our set standards. Subject to how the establishment process develops we may require some restrictions to cart traffic however where possible will limit the impact to golfers. Pitch mark repair is critical during the establishment of the greens seed and the agronomy team will remind all golfers of this importance prior to each round via the starter.
During closure we expect to complete the following; trimming of all Palm trees, native grass pruning of the back 9, re-painting of course benches, renewal of course signage and placement of new flags, cups and sticks. During the course closure all our agronomy equipment will be serviced and sharpened to ensure precise mowing of the winter over-seed.
Looking ahead to November and the agronomy team will be focused on developing the over-seed to final mowing heights while ensuring course presentation is primed for the golfer’s enjoyment. Once final mowing heights are achieved the team will be concentrating on upcoming tournaments such as Club Championships and the King Hamad Trophy. With over-seed established the team will turn its attention to winter project works such as desert detailing, landscape removal, tree pruning and bunker sand distribution works. November will also mark the closure of the clubhouse lawns and Wee Monty for seeding on the following dates:
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy your golfing in November.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
