February was a busy month for the agronomy team as we strived to present the course in prime conditions for play. Temperatures finally began to increase towards the end of the month which resulted in a green up of our base Paspalum turf and aided in faster recovery from divots and pitch marks. All turf areas continue to perform well with strong coverage of over-seed present; greens speed was maintained at 10.5 for the month with good ball roll present.
The team was focused on improving desert areas, bunker renovation and lake cleaning during February. By month’s end 80% of bunkers have had drainage repairs, sand levels adjusted and new sand added as needed. Several areas of desert in landing zones have had native planting significantly reduced, re-grading and stone removal as we improve the playability of the golf course. Other ongoing works such as tree canopy pruning, lake cleaning, edging of turf areas and weeding of desert areas are progressing well. Native grass pruning on the Wee Monty was completed in February. The irrigation and workshop teams are busy finalizing winter servicing and upgrade works to ensure our watering systems and equipment fleet is in good working order ahead of the upcoming summer period.
As our focus turns to March the team will continue to drive progress on bunker and desert works while also targeting to complete irrigation servicing, tree pruning and desert detailing by month’s end. As temperatures increase the agronomy team will focus on encouraging our base Paspalum grass back to active growth and commence more frequent vertical mowing to allow light better penetrate the winter over-seed to reduce the impact of the transition between summer and winter grasses. Light aeration of turf areas is scheduled to promote root growth, air movement and water penetration of the soil profile. All maintenance works will be carried out with limited disruption if any to the pliability of the course. A busy month of play is expected with several events and tournaments planned and the team will strive to present the course to our set standards daily.
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy your golfing in March.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
