Dear Members and Guests,
August was a busy month for the agronomy team as we worked on improving detailing and completed our final major renovation of the year to greens with full recovery achieved within 10 days. After the extreme heat in July temperatures decreased and humidity levels rose somewhat in August. This enabled us to restore a more uniform colour to turf areas, gain recovery from heat stress and push further recovery from transition in rough. Greens continue to perform strongly with speeds consistently above 10 outside of the renovation period.
A major area of focus during August was on improving bunker conditions and consistency of sand depths. All bunkers have had sand levels adjusted, liner repaired and drainage checked with good results achieved; we still have a number of bunkers where some additional sand is required; sand is ordered and will be added during the closure for over-seeding. During the month we commenced more aggressive cleaning, weeding and reshaping of landscape areas as we strived to improve upon the playability of these areas. These works will be ongoing for the coming months with a focus on removing weeds, larger stones and over-grown plants in high play zones around the course. We continue to face major challenges in receiving irrigation and machinery parts due to supply chain delays caused by COVID-19; these delays are impacting our ability to repair all irrigation breaks in a timely manner and ensure our machinery fleet remains fully operational. Hopefully the bottle necks in the supply chain will begin to reduce as we enter 2022. All benches and cooler lids have been renovated as we drive standards ahead of the start of the busier golfing season in September.
With summer working hour restrictions between 12-4 removed in September this will enable the agronomy team to maintain the course more efficiently. Works will be ongoing on improving desert areas and general attention to detail around the course. As temperatures decrease pressures on our irrigation network will reduce enabling lake levels to be restored to full. Regular vertical mowing and aeration will be ongoing as we look towards turf areas receiving seed in late October. With seeding in mind some shaping of fairways, approaches, greens and tees will be adjusted to improve upon playability and limit the impact of transition in summer when many rough areas become weak and bare.
The agronomy team would like to thank all golfers for their ongoing support and understanding during renovations and transition this summer period and hope you enjoy playing the golf course in more favorably weather conditions in September.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
