Course Update

August Report

The golf course showed swift recovery in July from the recent irrigation outages with uniform colour and turf health returning within the first week of the month. During the month humidity increased significantly as winds reduced which helped maintain moisture within the soil profile, reduce dry patches and encourage recovery of weak transition areas. Overall the course continues to perform well with strong growth, uniform colour and healthy turf present. Increased plant growth regulation, reductions in mowing heights and additional rolling helped maintain greens speeds of 10 throughout July. A number of weak areas in rough still remain however recovery from transition continued to progress week on week. Despite reduced working hours due to summer restrictions and ongoing COVID-19 controls the team has made good progress on improving desert area detailing, repairing irrigation issues and weeding around the course.

As our attention turns to August the main focus for the team will be on restoring full coverage in rough areas and ensuring turf health ahead of September and the start of the autumn season. With aggressive renovations carried out during our forced closure period we have removed the planned invasive maintenance for August to limit disruption to playing conditions. Cultural practices such as light vertical mowing, solid tining and top-dressing are planned to help maintain firmness and promote air movement within the soil profile. Works on improving detail, catching up on edging and weeding will continue over the coming month. Another area of focus for the team is weed control to roughs as we target to reduce populations over prior year; to-date we are seeing positive results in control of both spurge and sedge; chemical applications are ongoing which will enable the agronomy team to present a much cleaner coverage of grass for the autumn season.

As we enter the second half of summer season the agronomy team is looking ahead towards over-seeding; all seed is on route to Bahrain and expected to arrive by late August. This season we will once again review mow lines, heights of cut and non-seeded areas as we strive to reduce the impact transition has on the rough.

Facility of the Year

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"

The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.

The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.

“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”

The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.

“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”

Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
