Dear Members and Guests,
Temperatures in April rose significantly causing a return to active growth of the Paspalum turf; the winter over-seed continues to perform strongly as soil temperatures favour both grasses at present. Project works were limited with the team focused on daily course set up, agronomic programs and weekly cultural programs due to reduced working hours for the holy month of Ramadan. Ongoing mowing height adjustments along with regular vertical mowing are aiding the Paspalum to gain a competitive edge over the winter grass types and will help easy transition issues in late May. As with prior years maintaining greens speed at this time is more challenging as both grass types perform strongly; increased plant growth regulation and mowing height adjustments are helping. As normal working hours return in May additional afternoon mowing and rolling will be scheduled to ensure speed is more consistent throughout the day.
Looking ahead to May and the main focus of the agronomy team will be on improving detailing and reducing weed populations in desert areas around the course. Planned works include tree canopy pruning, bunker sand depth adjustments, lake edge cleaning, painting of course furnishings and weeding/cleaning of in play desert areas. Plans are in place to adjust greens shaping and size over the coming 6-8 weeks; over time greens tend to shrink and the agronomy team will utilize as-built drawings and GPS to restore shaping over the coming month. Subject to the area requiring extending some additional pin locations may be restored. The process will involve regular reductions in mowing heights and increased cultural practices to enable extended turf areas to develop to green grade; we expect works to be completed by mid/late June with no impact on playability expected during the process.
As temperatures increase during the month we expect to see a decline in the winter grass species and for the Paspalum to begin to dominate. Regular vertical mowing and height adjustments will be ongoing as we strive to reduce the impact transition has on playability and course aesthesis. As with prior years the rough is our major challenge area as the summer turf receives reduced sunlight during winter months. High traffic areas are expected to transition weak and in some cases have bare or thin turf present in the early parts of summer. Fertility programs, renovations and turfing will all be focused around minimising the effect transition causes. Historically tee and bunker banks have caused significant issues during this period with large areas suffering turf loss as a result of seeding; by not seeding these areas we expect much improved course aesthesis during summer months.
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy your golfing in May.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
