Temperatures increased significantly during May resulting in the winter over-seed declining as the transition between grasses continued. The base Paspalum turf is showing aggressive growth with full transition achieved on all areas excluding rough by month’s end. A limited amount of winter over-seed remains in rough however is expected to decline over the coming weeks. Overall transition is pleasing this season with weak areas limited to high traffic areas in rough. The team is addressing weak areas by adding fertility and performing aeration works to encourage the summer grass back to full coverage.
Greens continue to perform strongly with pleasing turf density/health present and good ball roll with consistent speeds of 10-10.5. Upcoming summer renovations are expected to reduce softness, promote air movement within the soil profile and ensure prime playing conditions for the year ahead. We continue to practice strict COVID-19 safety measures to reduce contact points on the golf course and enable a safe working environment for the team. The return of bunker rakes to the course has helped improve conditions however inconsistency remains an ongoing issues. As time allows during the summer season works to improve bunker conditions and create more uniform sand depths will be ongoing.
Looking ahead to June and the main focus for the agronomy team will be on completing the transition process in rough and encourage full coverage of the summer grass to be restored. Ensuring turf health as temperatures increase further will be critical for maintaining uniform colour with plans in place to operate extended water shifts to ensure dry areas are limited. All surfaces will have frequent and light cultural practices during June to improve firmness and overall turf health. All works will be carried out in a way to best limit any disruption to play.
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and wish all players an enjoyable playing experience in June.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
