During first half of April the team was focused on completing aggressive renovations to all surfaces during the closure period. The agronomy team was pleased with the results of works; full recovery was achieved by the second week with all surfaces returning to full coverage and uniform coverage. By carrying out these renovations early and during more favorable weather conditions turf health will benefit greatly during the summer season and reduce the impact of both renovations and transition during the summer months.
As temperatures increased during April the base Paspalum grass returned to aggressive growth and the winter over-seed began its decline as we enter the transition period between grasses. Early indications are positive for a smooth transition this year with only limited weak areas appearing in high traffic areas of rough; the team continues to encourage the summer grass back to full coverage in these areas to limit the turfing requirements in early summer. With increased growth greens speed has reduced slightly during the period of having two grasses present on putting surfaces; increased plant growth regulation applications began to restore speeds to 10 by month’s end.
We continue to operate as safely as possible during this period due to COVID-19 with the team spilt, strict social distancing measures in place and touch points around the course minimized where possible. Due to these operational changes, a reduction in man hours and the commencement of the Ramadan period we are falling behind on desert detailing and weeded around the course. We continue to strive to ensure the course especially turf and in play areas are maintained to our set standards to provide golfers with an enjoyable playing experience.
Looking ahead to May and with reduced hours during the Ramadan period and ongoing social distancing measures we will focus on preparing the course for daily play, managing the transition between grasses, maintaining irrigation networks and ensuring all agronomy programs are maintained. We will also be continuing to utilize food and beverage staff to assist in weeding desert areas; divoting fairways and general attention detail works during the closure period of restaurants which will help us maintain the course to improved standards during this challenging time.
As always, the agronomy team thanks all our golfers for their ongoing support and understanding and wishes all an enjoyable playing experience in May.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
