Course Update

Dear Members and Guests,
During January temperatures dipped to the lowest point of the winter so far with a number of nights hitting single digit figures; we experienced a couple of rain events which helped flush our soil profile and create a green up effect on the turf areas. The low temperatures coupled with plant growth regulation applications has reduced grass growth and enabled the agronomy team to tighten up surface canopy’s and maintain greens speed at 10.5 throughout the month. Non over-seeded fairways and approaches have performed well during the coldest point with colour and condition maintained.

The New Year marked the commencement of winter project works around the golf course as the team worked towards improving native desert, bunkers, detailing and irrigation efficiency for the season ahead. Our main focus is to improve upon the playability and enjoyment of the golf course for our players by improving bunker conditions and desert areas. Currently the team is in the process of checking and adjusting bunker sand depths across the entire championship course and adding sand, repairing liner and checking drainage as needed to ensure hazard playability improves; additional bunker sand is expected to arrive in February to improve the worst performing bunkers.

The irrigation team is currently making improvements to our system in an effort to reduce water runoff into desert areas and bunkers, minimize dry areas and install new drip line in desert areas for improved landscape plant watering. Winter servicing of irrigation infrastructure and machinery is ongoing and on track for completion.

As we look ahead to February the team will be busy preparing the course for a busy playing period and the upcoming events. Our focus will remain on winter projects, detailing and refining playing surfaces to ensure premium conditions for the month ahead. Temperatures are expected to increase which will help the Paspalum return to slow growth, improve divot recovery and reduce the impact of cart traffic damage.
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy your golfing in February.

Director of Agronomy

Facility of the Year

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"

The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.

The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.

“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”

The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.

“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”

Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
