During March the agronomy team was busy with preparations for the MENA Tour and several member and guest events. Temperatures increased during the month resulting in a return to colour and slow growth in the base Paspalum grass. The over-seed continue to perform strongly with good coverage and density throughout. Greens speed and ball roll remain consistent at 10-10-5 on the stimp meter.
As we look ahead to April our focus will move onto the transition between winter and summer grasses; regular vertical mowing and aeration is scheduled to encourage the base Paspalum grass to commence aggressive growth and to begin becoming the dominate species. Rough will be the most challenging area for transition and the team will strive to limited weak and bare areas appearing during this transition period through regular mowing height adjustments, fertility applications and increased cultural practices.
As temperatures beginning increasing we will focus on control of grassy and broadleaf weeds in rough areas as we strive to reduce populations over prior years. Light but frequent renovations will be ongoing around the golf course however disruption to play will be limited as the team ensures all surfaces are presented to our standard for the busy play levels expected in April.
Other works remain ongoing such as landscape removal in high traffic areas, adding of landscape in barren areas, cleaning and weeding of desert areas and lake bank maintenance. Behind the scenes irrigation winter servicing and machinery over haul works will be completed in April ready for the busy summer period ahead.
The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and wish all players an enjoyable playing experience in April.

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"
The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.
The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.
“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”
The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.
“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”
Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
