Course Update

July Report

June was a challenging month for the agronomy team due to strong winds and warm temperatures causing a number of areas to dry out and lose colour. The remaining winter rye grass has burned off in roughs and the base Paspalum turf is beginning to return to full coverage. A limited number of weak areas remain and will be turfed as needed over the coming weeks. Works commenced on the adjustments to the greens sizes;  we have extended all greens to varying degrees in a effort to revert back to our original design and or create more pin locations around the golf course; the newly extended areas are still considered approaches however during July we will merge into the putting surfaces as mowing heights are reduced.
During the Ramadan period we operated reduced hours for the team and as a result have fallen behind on detail works, our focus in the month ahead will be on weeding desert areas and completing the first cycle of summer renovations across all surfaces. The upcoming renovations will be the most aggressive of the season and are critical for ensuring surfaces remain healthy and playing conditions are of championship quality. All works will be communicated to golfers ahead of time and the agronomy team will strive to reduce the impact where possible to the guest experience. Full recovery from renovation will take 10-14 days however surfaces will improve day by day and are expected to create limited disruption to play.
While our main focus in the month will be on renovations and detailing the team will continue efforts to improve bunker consistency by monitoring sand depths regularly and begin adjusting the shape and sizes of the approaches and fairways. We will also be focused on controlling weed activity in roughs through our herbicide programs, our main challenge is the grasses weeds however this season we have expanding our herbicide programs and are confident improvements will be seen across the golf course this summer season.

The agronomy team would like to extend our thanks for your ongoing support and hope you enjoy your golfing in July.

Facility of the Year

Former General Manager DJ Flanders displays the award for 2013 "Facility of the Year"

The Royal Golf Club’s board of directors and senior management team are delighted to announce that the Club has been recognized as the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year 2013,” the top annual award from Troon®, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing.

The Club was selected from over 200 Troon-managed golf properties around the world at the annual Troon Conference which took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA from 14th to 16th January. Five golf clubs were shortlisted for consideration for the award including Troon North, the flagship property in Arizona.

“This award is a huge accolade and a tribute to the hard work of our dedicated team and supportive Membership,” commented DJ Flanders, former General Manager of the Royal Golf Club. “This is the first time a club has received the award in the first year of coming under Troon’s management so it’s a great achievement. Receiving such a prestigious award will bring the Club and Bahrain as a whole to the attention of the world’s golfing community.”

The criteria considered included the results of annual member, guest, owner and associate satisfaction surveys as well as financial results. The facility was able to reduce its operating costs substantially and significantly improve its GOP by implementing Troon standards. The facility also recorded solid Guest Satisfaction Scores in 2013 through the introduction of impactful programs including Troon Rewards, Troon Executive Card and Troon Values Your Time.

“I’m proud of our golf club being awarded Facility of the Year for the Troon Golf portfolio for 2013,” added Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company, the owning company of the Royal Golf Club. “The award shows the dedication and hard work of the management and staff. I would also like to thank the Members, Troon Golf Management, Board Members and Shareholders for their support. This award puts our golf club with a select group of golf facilities from around the world.”

Attended by over 400 delegates, the conference was the biggest in Troon’s 25 year history. Bruce Glasco Senior Vice-President and Managing Director, Troon International Operations commented. “This award not only recognizes the hard work and effort by the whole team at the Royal Golf Club but also the unflinching support from the Board of Directors. For the winner of this award to come from the International division not only demonstrates the way in which our programmes can be adapted to work in every part of the world but also the way they are embraced by our Associates to deliver for all our members and guests."
