2016/2017 Golf Season Review

Dear Members & Guests,

We thought it would be nice to give you a round up the 2016 – 2017 golf season at the Royal Golf Club.

First of all, last year’s Porsche Cup Series, which was played over 7 rounds and had a gross and nett division, was won by Mohamed Al Sayed and Kwang Seok Kim respectively.

The first 36 hole Club Championship was won by Mohamed Al Noaimi with a fantastic score of 151 strokes, beating Ronan Armstrong with 154 strokes. Mohamed Al Sayed took the nett division with a score of 148, beating Wayne Giles by one stroke. Stacey Thomas won the ladies gross division with 184 stokes and Sam Hill won the nett division with 158.

For those of you who played in the King Hamad Trophy, I’m sure you’ll remember Andrew Marshall managed his 5th victory in the event with an unbelievable score of 14 under par.

Eight of the Royalists then took on eight members of Doha Golf Club in a singles & doubles matchplay event. They were, of course, victorious!

Jason & Karin’s Captaincy came to an end and Riyad & Stacey ‘drove’ us into their Captaincy in the Annual Captain’s Day on Saturday 9th December. Iftikhar Butt, Reinhold Lutz and Steven Hill won their respective divisions with Barry Hobday winning the Captain’s Quaich. It was great to have you all in the Member’s Lounge for the presentation then around the pool for the Member’s Appreciation BBQ.

The Audi Sport National Day, a two day pairs betterball stableford competition, rounded off 2016 with some very generous giveaways and fabulous prizes. Steve Foster & Nayel Al Borshaid had 46 points in round one and followed it up in round two with 41 points!

As we entered 2017, we managed to resurrect the Jim Porter Trophy which was last played in 2013. The AAG group won the event with 246 points, beating the Royalists who had 233. This will act as the 2016 event with the 2017 edition planned provisionally for September.

The top 20 players from the club championship qualified for the Green & Brown Challenge – a betterball matchplay event between us and some of the Awali members which again, hasn’t been played for a number of years. I was fortunate enough to play (and maybe drink a few beers…) with Ben Elsworth which was really enjoyable, though I much prefer actual grass than the little mat! Our members showed them how to play some real golf and won the match overall. This is another one which we’ll try to get in again before the end of this calendar year.

At the end of January the Audi quattro Cup Series got underway. A hard fought multiple round series saw Jim Lanceley (who we’ll forget supports Newcastle and spent the majority of the series hungover) and Ben Elsworth take away two tickets to represent Audi Centre Bahrain in the Audi quattro Cup Final at Quivira Golf Club in Cabo San Luca, Mexico. We wish Jim and Ben all the best. Oh, and stay away from the tequila!

February saw the start of the Order of Merit. Unfortunately we were unable to find a sponsor for this year but I promise you we are working very hard on securing a sponsor for this series of events next year. Rob Lane is leading the series after June’s event. For the last two events, we’ll put in some AM tee times and create a seeded draw to give the event some more feel.

February also saw over 100 mls of rain which meant the Valentines Scramble was cancelled and the Black Tee Challenge was moved to April.

The Annual Pro Challenge saw three teams Beat The Pros – brotherly duo Ebrahim and Badea Esbai, Fahad Al Hakam & Khalifa Daij won the event with a very impressive nett score of 58.1. I think next year we’ll put the black tees on the blues next year!

Yaseen Le Falher won the best trophy at the Royal Golf Club, the Black Tee Challenge beating Sam Hobday on the count back with a total gross of 74. Young Ali Al Kowari took the nett prize with a very tidy, 69. Stacey Thomas and Dana Whiteley took the ladies best gross and nett prizes respectively.

The first weekend of April is one we all wait for – Masters week. Thursday night we started the weekend as they do at Augusta with the par 3 event. Several players managed a one over par 28 – but Jason McNamara won on the count back. Could Jason go on to be the first player to win both the par 3 event and the green jacket? Unfortunately not… Sanjay Lal’s 39 points combined with Pat Perez’s 38 (2 under par, 70) made him the RGC Masters Champion. Maybe next year Jason!

Dustin & Dana Whiteley and Phil & Julie Dixon raced to victory in the F1 scramble winning by 5 shots with a nett score of 55.4.

May was a very busy month with the Member’s Appreciation Range Party kicking things of - which hopefully you all enjoyed. There’s a rumor Rob Lane is still on the range trying to get it in that washing machine…

Ronan Smith then beat his good friend Sebastian Woodrow on the count back in a very worth event, the Seve Ballesteros Memorial Trophy, both with 39 points. Great to see two very talented young gentlemen coming through the ranks and reducing their handicap significantly over the season.

The 3nd Annual Ladies Captain’s Charity Golf Day, supporting the cancer patients of Salmaniya Hospital was a great event organized by our very own, Stacey Thomas. Matthew & Araceli Deakin and Edward & Martina O’Reilly took the trophy with a nett score of 57.6.

The Captain vs Ladies Captain was another event we managed to resurrect and closed out the 2016 – 2017 season. Both Captain’s sponsored some really great prizes, but it was Riyad’s team were victorious in the team event with a combined stableford score of 635 vs Stacey’s team scores of 625.

It was great to see an increase, albeit fairly small, in the member satisfaction survey results. We’ve been working hard over the last month or so to plan for the 2017 – 2018 season. We already have some enhancements up our sleeves following the upgrade in our handicap system.

I am very fortunate to be spending 6 weeks over the summer working at one of our sister properties in Malaysia, but I will be back at the end of August ready for the 2017 – 2018 season!

Have a great summer.
